Park Resident Cabin Host to Help Preserve the Past July - October, 2025

A perfect opportunity for history buffs. Myakka has five small historic palm log cabins built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s. These unique structures, set in a beautiful oak and palm hammock, help give visitors a chance to step back into Florida's past. You are a important part of preserving these cabins by cleaning and keeping them well maintained and offering the experience to stay in them to the public.

RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

  • Cleaning and maintenance of cabins, both inside and out
  • Routine, thorough, cleaning of bathroom, kitchen, fireplace and sleeping area
  • Garbage removal, stock linens, inventory kitchenware, and prepare cabins for occupancy
  • Keep interior and exterior free of cobwebs
  • Check a/c filters, fire extinguishers and smoke alarms on a routine basis
  • Check litter, grills, fire rings, picnic table outside
  • Abide by park rules concerning uniforms and safety at all times
  • Report to ranger station when the cabins are clean and ready for occupancy


REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • We need folks who are personable and pay attention to detail
  • Have good general maintenance skills
  • Have superb cleaning skills and are very thorough
  • Resident volunteers will be provided a campsite with water, electric, sewer hookup and picnic table


SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is available for the months of July through October 2025
  • A minimum of 2 months and maximum of 4 months is required
  • Cabin Cleaners work 4 days a week, with 3 days off; daily hours will vary with workload
  • Schedule will include weekend days
  • 24 hours per week per campsite is required for park residency
  • There are usually 2 couples assigned cabin cleaner positions
  • Schedules can vary and overlap to suit individual/park needs or workload


TRAINING/PRE-REQUISITS:

  • In the Volunteer Portal, have a Volunteer Application and a current Volunteer Agreement and Volunteer DEP Annual Combo Training (diversity, sexual harassment & workers' compensation), both renewed annually. Must pass state and national sexual predator checks.
  • Training on cabin cleaner duties and expectations will be provided by staff or experienced volunteers upon arrival and prior to beginning regular schedule.
  • This cabin cleaner position requires the use of a UTV or golf cart and therefore requires a valid driver's license and DEP UTV/LSV training prior to vehicle operation. The UTV course will be offered within the first week

  • Be a part of the Florida Park Service family, working alongside like-minded staff and volunteers
