Maintenance

Be a part of something bigger than yourself -- Koreshan State Park, Mound Key Archaeological State Park (an island) and Estero Bay Preserve State Park. We are looking for folks who can work alongside park rangers and other volunteers outside in the Florida Spring and Summer time to help with grounds keeping, cleaning, opening and closing the park and park maintenance. This opportunity may include:

50% Maintenance - Maintain the cleanliness of park grounds and facilities including campsite/restroom cleaning and trash collection/removal. Report or provide preventative and corrective maintenance needs on park equipment, buildings, and areas throughout the park. Report and/or provide grounds keeping tasks such as trimming vegetation, mowing or using other equipment to maintain the aesthetics and safety of people and property.

25% Visitor Services - Meet visitors, answer questions and provide information and direction. Resolve visitor concerns while maintaining good public relations. Assist with the planning and participate in special events as requested by park management. At all times present a professional Florida Park Service public image.

10% Resource Management - Control native, invasive and exotic vegetation via mechanical and chemical (herbicide) means. Monitor and protect wildlife and natural areas. Monitor and report on flora and fauna observations. Work to restore habitats via natural methods.

10% Protection - Ensure park rules are interpreted in a friendly yet effective manner. Routinely monitor for safety concerns and take appropriate action to correct and/or report any observed concerns in a timely effective manner. Always wear the required personal protective equipment.

5% Other duties.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Maintain a professional and personable attitude with all staff, volunteers, and visitors
  • Follow the schedule and duties list and report any concerns and/or changes
  • Available to work a variety of shifts and days to meet essential coverage to open and close the park
  • Schedule all volunteer time and wear the uniform. Never volunteer unannounced
  • (Park Resident Volunteers Only) Meet the minimum hour requirement (24 hours per campsite) each week per site (may split with multiple site occupants). Work with managers to make up any time missed.
  • Maintain a valid Driver's License
  • Pass national and local sex offender checks
  • Safely work outdoors in heat, humidity, rain, and other conditions among vegetation, insects and animals
  • Report any accidents or incidents immediately to park staff
  • Safely work among blood and bodily fluids
  • Safely work around uneven terrain, slip, trip or fall hazards
  • Use good ergonomics and have the ability to lift a minimum of 25lbs from floor to waist
  • Safely work with equipment with moving parts, loud noises, fumes, and other hazards
  • Safely work with chemicals and products
  • Perform all tasks as trained and request training on equipment prior to first use
  • Log all volunteer hours in the Volunteer Portal by the last day of the month
  • Demonstrate professionalism and care with any keys, radios or equipment and ensure they are returned after the volunteer time has ended
  • Never use park property for personal use


Benefits

Park resident volunteers receive a camp site with power and water hook ups, some sites have sewer. All volunteers have the opportunity to earn park day use passes at 50 hour and 250 hour milestones. By signing the volunteer agreement, you are covered by the State of Florida Workers Compensation and general liability policy.
